Published by Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, 1997. Soft cover, first edition. Size: 22 x 30.5 cm / 52 pages (leperello accordion fold) — A special and significantly rare publication produced in conjunction with an exhibition collaborated between Issey Miyake and Isamu Noguchi at Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, in 1997 entitled 'Arizona'. The book highlights the mutual influence of the three close friends within their hybrid Japanese and American cultures. They formed friendship in New York City throughout the 1950s, Noguchi took recent Japanese immigrant Inokuma to Poston, Arizona, the site of an internment camp for Japanese-Americans in World War II where Noguchi lived voluntarily in solidarity with his countrymen, despite exemption as a New York resident. Inokuma became enthralled by the art and lore of the Hopi native Americans, returning several times and filling sketchbooks with the graphic Kachina dolls. These Hopi motifs later infiltrated Inokuma’s paintings, which in turn influenced Issey Miyake, another compatriot and mentee of Noguchi. A concertina format underscores the complimentary materials and forms found within sculpture, sketches, and garments. Excellent condition. Also included is the original ticket collateral from the exhibition!
